Volume 64: Issue 6 Brevard College For hearts and minds as large as the mountains Tuesday, April 30,1996 SGA Elects New Officers Jon Ostendorff Editor On Friday, April 26, the SGA officers for next semester were announced. Manabu Okawa, who ran against Vivian Rivers, won the election for president of SGA.The other officers are Erica Broadway for treasurer, Dan MacCaffrey for secretary, and Heidi Rivers and Okawa (Photo by J. Ostendorff) Rodenbaugh for vice president. Okawa, who is a freshman, ran and won on a campaign platform of placing bill changers in all the dormitories. He also has an idea for an opinion box to be placed in the Student Union. Rivers, a sophomore student, with more than a year’s experience in SGA, ran on a platform of promoting the new constitution and providing a balance between Twister Productions and SGA. To some of the incumbent officers of SGA, the election results were a complete surprise. Lyle Alexis, current SGA student body president, had this to say about the election results, “I was shocked, I feel like all the work we’ve done this year has gone down the tubes. I don’t think that this will be the same organization.” Alexis also said that if the candidates had had a chance to debate the issues in a public forum setting, the election results would have been different. After hearing the results, Vivian Rivers said, “I don’t know the acmal count, but I’m sure it’s close. I feel that it would have been better to have a debate between the candidates so that the students could see where we stand on the f / f f Steve Martin, Dean of Campus Life, announces the new officers (Photo by J. I would also like to wish Manabu lots of luck, although I believe that I am the only one who deserved the position.” When asked about the future of SGA, Rivers said that this election clearly shows that Twister Productions and Curt Crowhurst have taken over SGA and that the combination of those will, unfortimately, become one organization. Curt Crowhurst, coordinator of Twister Productions, said, “I feel that this election is very healthy for SGA. It speaks highly of the people who ran. I believe this will bring a different energy to the organization. ” B.C.
